Should you consider Smith & Wesson’s Shield Plus as your next micro-compact pistol purchase? We take a closer look at this popular model to see if it is the right fit for you. The M&P Shield Plus Series from Smith & Wesson may look similar to previous models but it is a huge leap forward. You may not be able to tell by looking at it, but once you get it in your hands, you can feel the difference and see the upgrades in the gun’s performance.

How does it feel in hand?
When you pick up this gun you notice the upgrades right away.
Grip Texture
It has an aggressive texture but not too bold. It is an upgrade from previous S&W Shield models. This gun is extremely thin and lightweight (20.2 oz.). This is a gun that packs a punch and can comfortably carry it all day. The Shield Plus has an “optimal 18-degree grip angle for natural point of aim” (https://www.smith-wesson.com/product/mp-shield-plus).
Trigger is Nice
After putting this gun to this test, the ease of the trigger jumps out as an improvement over previous models. Our tester thought it might be the best trigger on an S&W Shield model and possibly the best on any M&P gun. It certainly is an excellent upgrade gun users will enjoy.
The Magazine
While not as evident at first, the magazine may be the best improvement on the M&P Shield Plus Series. The original shield magazine held 8 rounds, but the new magazine holds 13, and it is roughly the same size. This is massive. The extended magazine gives a place for your pinky to rest when gripping the gun.
Easy to Break Down
This gun is very easy to break down. The take-down lever is just like the original shield. “M&P’s patented take-down lever and sear deactivation systems all for disassembly without pulling the trigger.”
What are my options?
You have plenty of options for the Shield Plus. While an excellent gun for first-time gun owners, it also has enough to intrigue long-time gun owners. It comes with or without a manual thumb safety. You can also choose a Performance Center model with fiber optic sights and the Crimson Trace red dot optic.
