Description
1918 production US Model of 1917 Rifle. Eddystone production. Rifle retains original August of 1918 Eddystone barrel. Condition is, frankly, phenominal - this rifle is astonishingly nice! All metal finishes retain the original deep rust blue and have not been sandblasted and parkerized as so many of these were. All original proof marks, inspection marks, and ordnance marks are present. Wood is shiny and clean, with a few little dings near the butt but otherwise an excellent varnish remains. Buttplate shows some abrasion around the very edge of the top and bottom but is otherwise very clean. Mechanical functions are excellent. Bore is extremely shiny and absolutely clean. An original bayonet is included in similarly excellent condition. Metal on the bayonet shows some discoloration but no rust, pitting, or crusting. Edge grind is original and is sharp on the last 3-4 inches. Handle wood does not match in color from side to side, but this is not uncommon as the grip panels were not sorted during assembly. Scabbard retains most of its original finish and shows original leather cover. This rifle is absolutely remarkable and, by virtue of retaining the original finish and parts, must have avoided virtually every arsenal refinish most 1917s were subjected to. Very few rifles survived in the original finish, and this would make a great centerpiece to a collection.
