The Kalashnikov USA™ KP-9 is our 9mm semi-automatic AK style pistol based upon the Russian Vityaz-SN submachine gun. Made proudly here in the U.S.A., the KP-9 offers a variety of options for the Vityaz enthusiast. With its hinge block and quick detach mount on the back, the KP-9 comes SBR ready, which allows you to enjoy shooting while waiting on your BATFE paperwork. Those who prefer the pistol style can use the JMac RSA 5.5 stock adapter along with the 1913 pistol brace by SB Tactical. The KP-9 accepts Kalashnikov USA 30 round magazines, has a hinged top cover and Picatinny rail along with ½”-28 threaded flash suppressor.

I chose the Kalashnikov USA KP-9 because it’s American made, affordable, and available. My familiarity with the AK platform made this too good to pass up!
The good: This sucker is a tank! It’s fit and finish are on par with my Izmash and VEPR AKs, and it’s as close as I’ll ever get to a real Vityaz. The top cover, which cracked at the back in early models seems thick and sturdy. The spring-loaded cover is a nice touch. The rear trunion with its built-in folding mechanism easily accepted the K-USA triangle brace. It is very solid and there is no play in its lockup. The magazines, while polymer, are easy to load and do not wiggle when seated. The pistol grip is comfortable, and the internals are well-finished. The small rail under the barrel is a great addition to mount a light. The rivets are round and tight.
The not-so-good (these are minor and definitely do not affect my overall satisfaction): The case that comes with the weapon is pretty cheap. It’s obviously a one-size-fits-all accessory that is used for other K-USA products, but at least it’s hard-sided. Some weapons ship in a cardboard box. The weapon only comes with one magazine, and there is a significant back order for more. The gas tube is easy to remove but hard to re-install. This isn’t especially unusual in AK pattern weapons though. The front sling mount is only set up for right-handed shooters like all AKs,
